Form 1040-NR: The Complete Guide

What Form 1040 NR looks like

As a nonresident alien in the United States, you’ll quickly become familiar with Form 1040-NR. Anyone who engages in U.S. business, even without citizenship status, needs to report their income to the IRS.

Form 1040-NR Instructions

First of all, understand if you are required to complete this form. Nonresident aliens refers to non-U.S. citizens who do not meet the Green Gard requirements or the substantial presence test.

If that describes your circumstances, take the following steps:

  • Get all of your wage-related paperwork together.
  • Choose whether you will be filing manually or virtually.
  • Calculate your income, investments, retirement, and all other aspects of your financial situation. The total determines how much is to be withheld per U.S. tax laws.
  • Remember to claim your dependents and exemptions!
  • File your return by mail or online by the deadline.

Mailing Address

If you decide not to file your tax return online, you’ll need to mail it to the IRS. There are different mailing addresses, which one to use depends on whether or not you’re sending a payment or just the forms.
